Google Business Profile Call Tracking Without Losing Your Number
By Josh Croom · October 27, 2026 · 9 min read
You can track calls from your Google Business Profile two ways: read the Calls count in the profile's Performance report, or put a call tracking number in the main phone slot and list your own number as an additional phone. Either way, your sign, your trucks and your website keep showing one main number the business owns for good.
Why the number on his trucks stopped working
Tuesday, 7:15 AM. A roofer pays to wrap his two trucks, and the designer prints the number from a call tracking service he tried last spring. He stopped paying for that service in the fall, and nobody remembered the number lived on the trucks.
For months the trucks drive around town with a number that rings nowhere. A neighbor who jots it down in a parking lot gets a dead line, so she calls the next roofer she finds on Google. The paint outlasts the number, and nobody notices, because a call that never connects doesn't show up in any report.
What your Business Profile already counts
Open your Business Profile, choose Performance and pick a date range. The Calls number there counts the times someone tapped the call button on your profile, and Website clicks counts taps on your website link. For many small businesses, those two numbers tell you most of what you need, especially if you also ask every new caller how they heard about you.
The count has limits, though. A tap isn't a conversation, so it can't tell you whether the call connected, how long it ran or whether it turned into a job. It also misses anyone who reads your number off the profile and dials it by hand. A tracking number fills that gap, because it logs every call it carries.
What the numbers say about calls
Almost every call from our clients' Google ads starts with a tap on a button.

How a call tracking number works
A tracking number is a separate phone number that forwards every call to your main line. Only one place shows it, so every call to that number came from that place. The tracking service logs the time, the length and whether anyone picked up, and the caller never knows the call took a detour.
Google uses the same idea in its ads. A Google forwarding number is a unique number Google shows on your ad, and Google Ads routes the call to your actual business phone. Call reporting then shows each call's length, its start and end time, the caller's area code and whether the call connected. Whenever it can, Google picks a forwarding number that shares your area code.
That's why counting ad calls never means changing your printed number. 95% of calls from our clients' Google ads were a tap on a call button. The tap rings a Google line that passes the call to the number you gave Google, so your main number stays put.
Is a call tracking number allowed on Google Business Profile?
Yes, as long as it reaches your business. Google's guidelines ask for a phone number that connects to your individual business location and stays under the direct control of the business. They also ask for a local number instead of a central call center line whenever possible, and they rule out numbers that send callers to anyone other than the actual business.
A local tracking number that forwards straight to your own phone fits those rules. A number that routes callers to a lead service or an outside call center doesn't, and Google won't accept a premium number that charges the caller.
Your profile can hold your primary number plus up to 2 more. So the tracking number goes in the primary slot, and your main number goes in an additional slot. That keeps the number on your sign, your website and your directory listings on Google too. Google reviews each edit before it shows on your profile, so the change won't appear right away.
How to add a tracking number to your Business Profile
These seven steps keep your main number safe while the tracking number does the counting. You can do the first six in an afternoon, apart from the wait while Google reviews your edit.
Step 1
Pick your forever number
Choose one main line that rings the office and that the business will keep for good. Never use a staff member's cell, because it walks out the door when they do.
Step 2
Get a local tracking number
Choose a number with your own area code, and put the account in the business name. Google's guidelines prefer a local number, and the business has to control it.
Step 3
Forward it to your main line
Set the tracking number to forward to your forever number. Then call it from a cell phone and make sure the right phone rings, with your own greeting on the voicemail.
Step 4
Swap the numbers on your profile
In your Business Profile, put the tracking number in the primary phone slot and move your main number to an additional phone. Google reviews the change before it goes live.
Step 5
Tag your website link too
Add tracking tags to the website link on your profile, such as utm_source=google, utm_medium=organic and utm_campaign=profile. Google Analytics then lists those visits under that campaign name in its Traffic acquisition report, so you can tell them from the rest of your search visits.
Step 6
Never print the tracking number
Keep it off your sign, your trucks, your cards and your website. If you ever drop the tracking service, only the profile has to change, and every printed copy of your main number still works.
Step 7
Test every number every three months
Call each number from a cell phone, including the tracking line, the main line and any old numbers that still forward. Check that the right phone rings and that the greeting is current.
Which number goes where
Print one main number everywhere people can see it, and let tracking numbers live only where they count something.
| Place | Number to use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sign, trucks and cards | Your main number | Paint and print can outlast a tracking number. |
| Your website | Your main number | It's the number people save and share. |
| Facebook and directories | Your main number | AI answers read your number from these sites. |
| Business Profile, primary phone | A tracking number, if you use one | It counts the calls your profile sends. |
| Business Profile, additional phone | Your main number | It keeps the number on your sign on Google too. |
| Google ads | Google's forwarding number | Google routes it to your business phone and logs each call. |
What a week of calls looks like
When every number does a single job, your call log names the source of each call. A missed call shows up as clearly as an answered one, so you can see which calls need a callback.

Questions people ask
Can I use a call tracking number on my Google Business Profile?
Yes, if it's a local number your business controls and it forwards straight to your business. Google's guidelines rule out numbers that send callers to anyone other than the actual business. Put the tracking number in the primary slot and your main number in an additional phone slot.
Will a call tracking number hurt my local SEO?
Google's guidelines allow one, as long as it's a local number that reaches your business and the business controls it. Keep your main number on the profile as an additional phone, so Google still shows the same number as your sign, your website and your listings, and the tracking number only adds a way to count calls.
How do I see how many calls my Google Business Profile gets?
Open your Business Profile, select Performance and choose a date range. Calls shows how many times someone tapped the call button on your profile. It doesn't show whether the call connected or how long it lasted.
Should I put a tracking number on my website?
Not as the number you print. Your website should show your main number, because people save it and directories repeat it. Google's ads use their own forwarding numbers, so Google counts ad calls without any change to what you print.
