Google Ads Call Tracking: How Long a Call Must Last to Count
By the Emprise Digital team · November 4, 2026 · 8 min read
Google Ads call tracking counts a call as a conversion only when it lasts at least the minimum length you set, so that one setting decides how many of your calls reach your reports. We read 1,787 calls from the ads we run, from August 6 to November 4, 2026, and 50.9% of the answered ones ended in under 60 seconds.
Two counts that don't match
2:15 PM. An HVAC owner counts the calls his office took from Google last week and gets more than his Google Ads report shows.
Nothing's broken, because his report counts only the calls that lasted as long as his setting says, and every shorter call stays out of it. Calls to his regular number never pass through Google at all, so they don't show up either. Some of those short calls were wrong numbers, and a few were customers asking whether he could come out to look at a unit the same day. The report can't tell those apart, so he has to decide where the line sits.
What Google Ads call tracking records
Google tracks a call by putting a Google forwarding number on your ad, or on your website for people who arrive from an ad. The call passes through to your real line, and Google logs the start time, the length and whether it connected. That's call reporting, and it has to be on in your account settings for any of this to work.
Google offers two kinds of call conversion for this. Calls from ads covers calls made straight from call ads and from the call and location assets on your ads. Calls to a phone number on your website covers people who click your ad and then call the Google number shown on your site, and it needs the Google tag and a call snippet on your pages.
On the accounts we run, 1,595 of the 1,787 calls came from the ads themselves and 192 from a Google number on a website. For our three home service accounts, the website number brought in 118 of 466 calls, so on those three accounts the website number brought in about a quarter of the calls.
1,787 calls, in four numbers

How long answered calls lasted
A 60-second rule counts only the calls that ran a minute or more, which is 49.1% of the answered calls, and it drops the 50.9% that ended sooner. A 30-second rule would count 70.9% of them. Neither one fits every business, because the kind of business you run changes how long a good call lasts.
Call length depends on the kind of business
The same setting means something different for a plumber, a pregnancy center and a nonprofit on a Google Ad Grant.
Home service calls ran longest. On those three accounts, 28.5% of answered calls lasted three minutes or more, and only 3.1% ended in under 10 seconds.
Grant calls ran shortest: 34.5% of the answered Grant calls ended in under 10 seconds, and 12.2% of all Grant calls were missed. A Grant that counts every call as a conversion counts a lot of hang-ups, so it pays to set a length there and to check who answers the phone. One online store had 26 calls in the same window, which is too few to read.
| Accounts | Calls | Missed | Middle answered call | Answered under 60 seconds | Answered 3 minutes or more |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home service companies (3) | 466 | 3.0% | about 75 seconds | 41.2% | 28.5% |
| Pregnancy centers on paid ads (13) | 1,074 | 4.7% | 58 seconds | 50.5% | 19.7% |
| Nonprofits on a Google Ad Grant (16) | 221 | 12.2% | about 37 seconds | 70.6% | 9.3% |
A short call can still be a good one
Google's report shows how long a call lasted, not what the caller said. A returning customer can book a visit in 40 seconds, and a sales pitch can run four minutes. So the length is a stand-in for a lead, and you're choosing the stand-in that's wrong least often for your business.
Local Services Ads use a different rule, and it's a useful comparison. Google charges a Local Services lead for a call you answer and talk through, and for a missed call in your business hours once the caller stays on the line more than 20 seconds. Our post on Google LSA leads explains that rule in full.
How to pick your call length
Your own calls answer this better than any default, and it takes one week of notes and about an hour of reading.
Step 1
Pull a week of call details
In Google Ads, open Report editor and choose Call details, where you'll see each call's start time, length and status.
Step 2
Mark what each call was
Match each call to your office's notes and mark it booked, question, wrong number or spam. Our call log template has the columns to use.
Step 3
Find the shortest good call
Look for the shortest call that booked work or a visit, and write down how many seconds it ran.
Step 4
Set the length just under it
Set your call conversion's length a little below that call. We use 60 seconds on most accounts and 30 seconds where quick booking calls are normal.
Step 5
Check it again in a month
Repeat the week of notes 30 days later, and if good calls still fall under the line, lower it. If junk calls keep counting as conversions, raise it.
Missed calls are the cheapest ones to save
92 of the 1,787 calls on our accounts were missed, which is 5.1%. Home service companies missed 3.0% and Grants missed 12.2%, and every one of those callers clicked an ad first, so calling them back within the hour costs you nothing but a few minutes.
Check your missed calls every morning, and call each one back before you return anything else. Our post on speed to lead covers what to say and how fast to do it.
Set up call tracking in your account
You need admin access to change these settings, so ask the account owner for it first if you don't have it yet.
1
Turn on call reporting
Open the Admin menu, choose Account settings and open the Call ads section, then turn on call reporting so Google can use its forwarding numbers.
2
Add calls from ads
Create a Calls from ads conversion, set your call length and make it a primary goal, so your bidding learns from it.
3
Add calls from your website
Create a Calls to a phone number on your website conversion. Then add the Google tag and its call snippet to your pages, so your site shows the Google number to people who came from an ad.
4
Check the call details report
After a few days, open Call details and match the calls there to your office's notes, so you know the numbers line up.
Your call tracking check
Tick these off as you go. Your ticks stay on this device.

How we track calls on the accounts we run
We set up call tracking on every account we run, and the portal we give each client lists each call with the time it came in and how long it lasted. Our post on conversion tracking covers forms and the other actions we count, and our post on call recording covers the setting that saves the audio.
If you'd like help reading your own calls, book a call with Miguel. He'll ask how your office answers the phone and walk through your call length with you.
Questions people ask
How does Google Ads call tracking work?
Google shows a forwarding number on your ad, or on your website for people who came from an ad. The call passes through to your real line, and Google logs when it started, how long it lasted and whether it connected. Calls that last at least the length you set count as conversions.
How long should a call be to count as a conversion in Google Ads?
Set it from your own calls: mark a week of calls by what they were, find the shortest call that booked work, and set the length just under it. 33 of the 42 call conversions on our accounts use 60 seconds, and a few use 30.
Does Google Ads track calls from my website?
Yes, with a Calls to a phone number on your website conversion. It needs the Google tag and a call snippet on your pages, so the site shows a Google number to people who arrived from an ad. On our accounts, 192 of 1,787 calls came that way.
Why does Google Ads show fewer calls than my phone log?
Google counts a call as a conversion only when it lasts at least your minimum length, and it tracks only calls to its own forwarding numbers. Calls to your regular number and short calls won't show up as conversions.
How many Google Ads calls are missed?
On the accounts we run, 92 of 1,787 calls from August 6 to November 4, 2026 were missed, or 5.1%. Home service companies missed 3.0% and nonprofits on a Google Ad Grant missed 12.2%.
