What we run for a tax or CPA firm

We run Google Local Services Ads under Google's tax category where Google offers it, and one Google Search campaign where it doesn't. A firm that only does bookkeeping runs on Search, because Google has no Local Services category for that work.

Google describes a tax specialist as someone who offers tax planning, preparation, filing and IRS audit help. We put the work you do on your profile and in your ads, and we leave off the work you don't, so you don't pay for calls you'd turn away.

We build your keywords as broad match, because people describe a tax problem in more ways than anyone can list. Google has said 15% of the searches it sees each day use wording it had never seen before, so the weekly search term read is where we catch the junk.

We're a small team in Conway, Arkansas, and we've run Google Ads since May 2016. We work with businesses across the US by phone and video, so your firm doesn't need to be near ours.

  • Local Services Ads: we build your profile with the tax work you do, your area and your hours, and you pay Google for each lead instead of each click. Open Spots Local runs these.
  • Search ads: where Google doesn't offer Local Services in your ZIP code, we write ads for the work you want more of, like returns, planning or IRS help. Each ad sends people to a page about that work, and Open Spots Search runs one Search campaign.
  • Bookkeeping: Google's US list of Local Services categories has tax services and financial planning but nothing for bookkeeping or payroll, so bookkeeping work runs on Search.
  • Tracking: we track each call and form back to the ad that brought it, so your portal lists every lead with the time it came in and what it cost.
  • Waste: we read your search terms every week and block the ones that won't become clients, like tax preparer jobs, tax classes or how to file your own return.

When people search for a tax preparer

In March 2026, people in the US searched tax preparer near me about 246,000 times. In July they searched it about 27,100 times, so the busiest month brought about 9 times the searches of the slowest.

Source: Google Keyword Planner, US searches for tax preparer near me by month, with tax preparation near me counted in. Read October 21, 2026, and Google rounds these counts.

The IRS opened the 2026 filing season on January 26. By April 17, it had taken in 72.8 million e-filed returns from tax professionals, more than half of the 137.6 million returns e-filed by then.

So we plan your year in two parts. From January to April, your ads go after returns, and you set a weekly cap your front desk can keep up with. If you get too busy, tell us and we turn the budget down for those weeks.

From May to December, fewer people look for help with a return, but they still look for an accountant. People searched accountant near me about 22,200 times in each of May, June and July 2026, and bookkeeper near me averaged about 18,100 searches a month across the year. So in those months, your ads can go after planning, IRS help and bookkeeping, if that's work you do.

A fall start runs slow at first, because fewer people search for a tax preparer until January. Those months give Google time to finish its checks on your firm and give you time to collect reviews, so your profile is ready when the rush comes.

Local Services Ads for tax firms

Google lists tax services among its US Local Services categories, and you pay for a lead instead of a click. Google doesn't offer every category in every area, so we check your ZIP code before you spend any time on it.

Google checks the owner and the license. For a tax specialist, Google's US list names a business owner identity check and business license checks. Some firms also go through a business check and send proof of professional liability insurance. We gather those files with you and send them to Google.

Reviews and replies count. Google ranks your ad on your bid and your profile, and that takes in how fast you answer, your stars, your review count, your reply time and your photos. Google suggests 5 or more reviews, and in some business types the ad can't show until it has 5.

Google doesn't credit tax leads. Google says lead credits aren't available for tax specialists, so a junk call stays on your bill. Google can also charge for a missed call in your open hours when the caller holds on for more than 20 seconds, so list only the hours someone picks up.

That's why our Lead Guarantee counts leads its own way for a tax firm. Word for word: A qualified lead is a call of 30 seconds or more, or a message, that Google charges you for in your Local Services account. A lead you tell us is spam, a wrong number or a sales call within 7 days doesn't count.

Google began moving Local Services campaigns into Google Ads in August 2026, with chosen home and storefront service businesses first. Wider groups follow in late 2026 and the rest in 2027, so we watch for your firm's date and move your account with it. Our Local Services Ads management page has the full routine we run on a Local Services account.

One kind of client, one ad

Someone who types tax preparer near me in February wants a person close by who can take their return this season. A good ad says what you prepare and how to book, in plain words, then sends them to a page about that work.

Tax ads carry their own limits. The Treasury rules for people who practice before the IRS ban false or misleading claims in any public ad. An enrolled agent or registered tax return preparer also may not describe the title with the word certified, or suggest a job with the IRS. We write inside those rules, and we never promise a refund size, a tax saving or that IRS trouble goes away.

Your phone in tax season

We track calls from both the ad and the website on some of our accounts. On those, 64% of calls came straight from the call button on the ad, before any website visit. So a new client often reaches your phone before your website.

Harvard Business Review researchers studied how fast companies answered new web leads. Those that reached a lead within an hour were nearly 7 times as likely to talk with the person who decides as those that waited longer. Our speed to lead guide has a callback routine any firm can run.

Plenty of leads arrive after you close: across 6 of our clients, 46% of website form leads came in at night or on a weekend. A message that lands on Sunday night should get a reply first thing Monday morning, from the office line, so the person knows it's you.

Your calls carry your clients' tax facts, so we turn off call recording in our system and in Google's, and we keep no transcripts. We still count every call and form, and your portal shows each one with the time it came in and what it cost.

Questions

How much does tax preparer marketing cost?

Ours starts at $497 every 4 weeks for Open Spots Search, plus a $997 setup paid once, or $0 on the 13-cycle plan. Open Spots Local, for Local Services Ads, is $997 every 4 weeks plus a $1,997 build. Your ad spend is separate, and you set the weekly cap.

Can a CPA firm run Google Local Services Ads?

A CPA firm can run them for its tax work. Google lists tax services among its US Local Services categories, and it checks the owner's identity and business license before the ad runs. Google doesn't offer every category in every area, so we check your ZIP code. It has no Local Services category for bookkeeping or payroll, so that work runs on Search.

When should a tax firm start advertising?

Start before the rush. Searches for tax preparer near me climbed from about 49,500 in December 2025 to about 135,000 in January 2026, then peaked near 246,000 in March. A fall start runs slow at first, and it gives Google time to finish its checks and you time to collect reviews before January.

Does Google give credits for bad tax leads?

No. Google says lead credits aren't available for tax specialists. So our Lead Guarantee uses its own line for a tax firm: A qualified lead is a call of 30 seconds or more, or a message, that Google charges you for in your Local Services account. A lead you tell us is spam, a wrong number or a sales call within 7 days doesn't count.

Do you guarantee leads for tax firms?

Open Spots Local carries our Lead Guarantee: A set number of Local Services leads, in trades and states that have a number. Your proposal prints the number for your trade and state, and what happens if you fall short. Our lead guarantee applies to Local Services leads only. Search Ads may bring extra leads but have no guaranteed minimum.

Who owns the Google Ads account?

The Google account is in your business name. We build and manage it. If we ever part ways, you keep the account and the call data.
