What we run for a plumbing shop

We run Google Search ads and Local Services Ads for plumbers, and we set up call tracking before an ad goes live. Your portal lists every call and form, with how long each call ran and the ad behind it.

We build your keywords as broad match, because people describe a clogged drain or a leak in more ways than anyone can list. Google says 15% of the searches it gets each day use wording it has never seen before. On our accounts, 49% of the searches that got a click in the 30 days to Oct 11, 2026 hadn't shown an ad even once in the 30 days before.

So broad match finds the new wording, and negative keywords keep the junk out. We don't block a search after one click, because 84% of the searches on our accounts that got a click and no lead over 30 days got exactly one click. We look for words that repeat and costs that add up before we block anything.

Open Spots is the plan we built for plumbing shops first, and its own site walks through it step by step. We're a small team in Conway, Arkansas, we've run Google Ads since May 2016, and we work with home service businesses across the US by phone and video.

  • Search ads: we write ads for the jobs you want more of, like drain cleaning, water heaters or a repipe, and point each one at the page that fits it best. Open Spots Search runs one Search campaign, and we build your landing page and call tracking.
  • Local Services Ads: we build your profile with every job you're licensed for, your service area and your hours, and you pay per lead instead of per click. Open Spots Local runs these.
  • Tracking: we track each call and form back to the ad and the search behind it, so your portal lists every lead with the time it came in and what it cost.
  • Waste: we read your search terms every week and block the ones that never turn into work. Searches for plumbing jobs, plumbing school, supply stores or how-to help are the kind we look for.

Answer every call, or call back fast

84% of Local Services leads on our home service accounts came in as phone calls. When nobody answered a caller's first call or it ran under 30 seconds, 91% of those callers didn't call again through the ad within 7 days.

So your portal shows the missed calls and the short ones, not just the total. Name who has the phone for every hour, lunch included, and roll a call to a backup phone after four rings. Call back each missed call within five minutes, from the business line, so they know it's you.

Your Google profile should list only the hours someone answers the phone. Google can charge you for a missed Local Services call in your open hours when the caller holds on for more than 20 seconds, so an hour with nobody at the phone can cost money and book nothing.

Set your voicemail to ask for a text: “You've reached (your business), and we're out on a job right now. Text this number with what you need and your address, and we'll call you back today.” A text with an address lets you call back with a time, not just a question.

Speed decides a lot of plumbing jobs, and Harvard Business Review researchers measured it in real sales leads. Companies that reached a new lead in the first hour were close to 7 times more likely to talk with the person who decides than companies that waited an hour or more. Our speed to lead guide has the full callback routine.

Ask for the address first

Half of all Local Services calls on our home service accounts came in before noon, so the morning calls set the route for the day. The typical call that connected lasted 95 seconds, which is time for an address and a time slot, not a long talk about the problem.

Booking in the order the phone rings

  • Your plumber crosses the county twice in one day.
  • A far call books for today, and every job after it runs late.
  • You talk through the problem for five minutes before you know where they live.
  • Nobody writes down the calls you couldn't book.

Booking by zone

  • You split your area into three to five zones and give each plumber one each morning.
  • You ask for the address first, so you know who's closest.
  • You offer a time that fits the zone, like nine or eleven on Tuesday.
  • Far calls go first thing tomorrow, unless water is running now.
  • You log every call you couldn't book by town and count that log once a month.

Local Services Ads for plumbers

Local Services Ads charge you for a lead, not a click, and every call or message goes to you alone. Plumbing was in the first group of trades Google began moving into Google Ads in August 2026.

Google ranks your ad on your bid and your profile. It weighs how fast you answer, what the person searched for, your star rating, your review count, your reply time, your photos and the checks you passed. So we turn on every job you're licensed for and none you aren't, send Google your license and insurance papers, and warn you before one expires.

Google charges for a call you answer, a voicemail, a message or a booking. For 30 days after a lead, Google keeps checking it and credits a low quality, repeated or invalid lead on its own. Google didn't charge for 23% of Local Services leads on our home service accounts.

For the rest, you have 30 days from a lead to rate it and ask for a credit. Our system rates every lead you pay for, and a person on our team checks the unclear ones while there's still time. Google makes the final call on every credit.

Open Spots Local carries our Lead Guarantee: A set number of Local Services leads, in trades and states that have a number. Your proposal prints the number for your trade and state, and what happens if you fall short. Our lead guarantee applies to Local Services leads only. Search Ads may bring extra leads but have no guaranteed minimum.

Our Local Services Ads management page has the full routine, and our Local Services Ads guide covers setup for shops that want to run it themselves.

Keep the customers you already paid for

A past customer who searches Google again can cost you a new lead. Google billed 67% of returning callers on our home service accounts as new leads when they came back through Local Services ads a month or more after their last lead.

Google can bill a returning customer as a new lead once 15 days pass with no contact between you. Many of them mean to come back, too: 45% of the reviews with words on our home service clients' profiles say they'd use the company again or recommend it.

So make the next call skip the search. Before you leave a job, ask to save your number in their phone as your business name plus the word plumber. Put a sticker with your name and trade on the water heater or under the sink, and text a thank-you that night from the business line.

Then give them a reason to call you first. A yearly drain or water heater check, offered at the end of a job and booked into your slowest month, can turn one call into a yearly customer. On three of our home service clients' websites, Google search visits in each site's slowest month ran 54% below that site's own monthly average.

March brings an easy reason to reach out. The EPA's WaterSense program holds Fix a Leak Week every March, and in 2026 it ran March 16 to 22. The EPA says the average household's leaks can waste more than 9,300 gallons of water a year. That week gives you a reason to text past customers and offer a leak check.

Questions

How much does plumber marketing cost?

Ours starts at $497 every 4 weeks for Open Spots Search, plus a $997 setup paid once, or $0 on the 13-cycle plan. Open Spots Local, for Local Services Ads, is $997 every 4 weeks plus a $1,997 build. Your ad spend is separate, and you set the weekly cap.

Should a plumber run Local Services Ads or Google Search ads?

Start with Local Services if Google offers plumbing where you work, because you pay per lead instead of per click. One home inspection account ran both for 90 days in spring 2026, and its Local Services leads cost $19.28 each against $134.59 for a Search lead. That's one account in another trade, so read it as a direction and not a rule. Search reaches the jobs you want more of, like water heaters or a repipe, and our [Local Services vs Google Ads study](/blog/lsa-vs-google-ads/) has the rest.

Is there a lead guarantee for plumbers?

Open Spots Local carries our Lead Guarantee: A set number of Local Services leads, in trades and states that have a number. Your proposal prints the number for your trade and state, and what happens if you fall short. Our lead guarantee applies to Local Services leads only. Search Ads may bring extra leads but have no guaranteed minimum.

Do I have to sign a long contract?

No. Stop anytime in your first 30 days, and the fee never starts. You can cancel anytime. Service runs through the end of the bill you're in, and then it stops. The 13-cycle plan has no 30-Day Stop.

Do you work with plumbers outside Arkansas?

Yes. We work with businesses across the US by phone and video. Google offers Local Services trade by trade and place by place, so we check your area before you spend any time on it.

Who owns the Google Ads account?

On Open Spots Search: It's your own Google Ads account, set up under our manager account. The ad account and its call data are yours either way. On Open Spots Local and Growth: The Google account is in your business name. We build and manage it. If we ever part ways, you keep the account and the call data.
