Where homeowners find a yard crew on Google

A homeowner who wants the yard done searches Google, and three things sit near the top: Local Services ads, Search ads and the map. We build and run the first two, and your reviews help you in Local Services and on the map.

Local Services ads charge per lead. Google lists lawn care services, landscaping services and tree services as Local Services categories in the US. It offers them place by place, so we check your ZIP codes and your state's rules before you spend any time on it. Every Local Services call or message goes to you alone, and Google credits back leads it finds invalid.

Search ads charge per click. You pick the jobs and towns the ads run for. That's how you reach the bigger work, like a stone patio, a retaining wall, new sod or drainage, with ads written for each job.

Reviews help you on the map and in Local Services. Google says more reviews and good ratings can help your local ranking, and it weighs your stars and your review count when it ranks a Local Services ad. In some trades the ad can't show until a profile has 5 reviews, so every finished yard is a good time to ask for one.

We're a small team in Conway, Arkansas, and we've run Google Ads since May 2016. We work with home service businesses across the US by phone and video, so your town doesn't need to be near ours.

Spring with a plan, and spring without one

The first warm week brings calls all at once. A crew that booked its regulars in winter has room for the new calls, while a crew that waited is weeks behind before it cuts a single yard.

Waiting for spring

  • Last year's customers never get a call, so some of them hire someone else.
  • Every new caller gets a yes, and the regulars get squeezed out.
  • Spring cleanups get a set day, and then the rain moves it.
  • The waitlist lives on a scrap of paper in the truck.

Booking spring in winter

  • You call last year's customers in January and offer each one a start week.
  • You build routes street by street from the yeses, so the crew drives less.
  • Spring cleanups get a week instead of a day, so rain doesn't break your word.
  • Your ads run for the open spots you counted, and a waitlist holds anyone you can't fit yet.

Ads that follow your season

Yard work runs on the weather, so your ads should too. We plan them around your busy and slow months, and you choose the weekly cap.

Home service work has a slow stretch every year. On three of our home service clients' websites, Google search visits in each site's slowest month ran 54% below normal, averaged across the sites. So we plan your ads around your season before the build, instead of finding out in February.

In spring, the ads go after the open spots on your routes. In summer, they can lean on the bigger jobs you want more of. In the slow months, they run for the work you still do, like leaf cleanup, or snow removal if you offer it, which Google also lists as a Local Services category.

Google's budget rules leave room for a busy day. It lets one busy day spend up to twice the daily average, and it keeps the whole month at or under 30.4 times that daily amount. On Open Spots we pay Google and take last week's exact charges from your business bank each Monday, up to the weekly cap you set.

Your regulars come first, because every yes you get in winter is a spot you don't have to win in April. Harvard Business Review published a study of online sales leads. Companies that tried to reach a new lead inside an hour were close to 7 times more likely to talk with the person who decides than companies that waited an hour longer. So pick one person who returns every spring call the same day, and our speed to lead guide has a callback routine any crew can run.

Answer the text, even from a job

Google says fast replies to Local Services messages, kept up over time, can lift your rank. A short text back also tells the customer when you'll call.

Hi, do you do spring cleanups? We're on Elm Street, front and back yard.

We do. I'm on a job until 3 today. Can I call you at 3:30 to set your week?

3:30 works. Thanks!

Sample
A sample text. Answer every one fast, even to say you don't do that job.

On our home service accounts, 19% of Local Services message leads came in at night or on a weekend. So we keep messages on, and you answer every one quickly, even when the answer is no.

We build around the yards and jobs you want

Weekly mowing, a spring cleanup and a stone patio are different jobs at different prices. So each one gets its own ads, and the jobs you want most go first in your ads and on your landing page.

We build with broad match, so Google can match the many ways people describe yard work. Google has said 15% of the searches it sees each day use wording it had never seen before. So every week we read your search terms and block the searches that won't become work, like lawn mower repair, landscaping jobs or how to lay sod yourself.

Your ads show to people in your area or who spend time there, and we build that area from the ZIP codes your crews serve. Google's default also reaches people elsewhere who are only interested in the place, and we switch that off on every local campaign.

We set up call and form tracking before an ad runs, so the numbers in your report are real. Your portal lists every call and form, with the time it came in and what it cost.

Google can screen a Local Services business before its ad runs. For lawn care and landscaping, Google's US list names a business and owner background check, a state license and general liability insurance, each for select businesses. We send Google your license and insurance files and warn you 45 days before one expires. On our accounts, 71% of the license and insurance files Google turned down had expired.

Google also rejects any photo with a phone number in it, even one painted on a truck or printed on a shirt or a sign. So keep phone numbers out of every photo of your finished yards.

Google began moving Local Services campaigns into Google Ads in August 2026, and lawn care was one of the first trades it picked. You're still billed only for valid leads, and our Local Services Ads guide covers setup and ranking step by step.

Questions

How much does landscaping advertising cost?

Ours starts at $497 every 4 weeks for Open Spots Search, plus a $997 setup paid once. Open Spots Local, for Local Services Ads, is $997 every 4 weeks, plus a $1,997 build. Your ad spend is separate, and we add nothing on top.

Do Google Local Services Ads cover lawn care and landscaping?

Yes. In the US, Google lists lawn care services, landscaping services and tree services as Local Services categories. Google offers them place by place, so we check your ZIP codes before you spend any time on it. Where it runs, you pay for each lead instead of each click.

When should a lawn care business start advertising for spring?

Start in winter. Call last year's customers first and set your routes, then have your ads ready before the first warm week, so they run for the open spots you have left.

What do my ads do in the slow months?

You choose the weekly cap all year. In the slow months, your ads run for the work you still do, like leaf cleanup or snow removal if you offer it. They can also run for the bigger jobs you book ahead for spring.

What if Google won't approve my business for Local Services?

Then we switch you to our Search plan. You don't pay a new setup, and your Local setup covers your first two Search bills.

Who owns the Google Ads account?

The Google account is in your business name. We build and manage it. If we ever part ways, you keep the account and the call data.
