Count estimates, not leads

Your install calendar shows what you sold last month, and your estimate count shows what gets built next month. A fence you quote today may not go in for a month or more, so a light week of estimates turns into an idle crew later.

So count your estimates each week, and not just your jobs. Your portal lists every call and form with the search behind it and what it cost, so you can count your new callers week by week too.

Write one number every Monday: last week's estimates set, next to your target. When a week comes up short, call back every open quote from the last two months, and work your list of past customers who may need a gate or a repair.

Mark repeat customers and old jobs when they call, so they don't count as new leads and your booking rate stays true. Call each open quote back within two weeks, before the homeowner forgets your visit or signs with someone else.

We're a small team in Conway, Arkansas, and we've run Google Ads since May 2016. Fencing is one of the trades we run Local Services Ads for today, and we work with home service businesses across the US by phone and video.

How many callers keep a crew full

Two rates turn your jobs into a weekly target: how many quotes you sell, and how many callers book a visit. Here's the math with sample numbers, so swap in your own from the last three months.

  1. Jobs

    Four fences a week

Start with the fences your crews put in during a normal week, not your best one, because a record week sets a target nobody can hold. In this example, that's four.

  2. Close rate

    Twelve estimates a week

If you sell one quote out of every three, four fences a week takes twelve estimates, since every sale costs you three trips out to measure.

  3. Booking rate

    Twenty-four callers a week

If half your new callers book a visit, twelve estimates takes twenty-four new callers every week, and your portal shows how many you actually got.

  4. Every Monday

    Check one number

Put last week's estimates next to your target of twelve. Then a slow stretch shows up on Monday, while there's still time to act, and not a month later when the post-hole digger sits idle.

Search ads for the fences you want

Search lets you pick the fence jobs and towns, write the words people read and send each click to a page about that fence. A shop that wants more vinyl, farm fence or commercial work can push those jobs first.

Each fence you want more of gets its own ad and its own page. Someone who searches for a wood privacy fence should land on a page about wood privacy fences, with your photos, your towns and a way to book an estimate.

We build your keywords as broad match, because people describe a fence in more ways than anyone can list. Google has said 15% of the searches it sees each day are worded in a way it had never seen before. So we read your search terms every week and block the ones that never turn into a job, like fence panels for sale, how to build a fence yourself and fence installer jobs.

We don't block a search after one click, because 84% of the searches on our accounts that got a click and no lead over 30 days got exactly one click. We look for words that repeat and costs that add up before we block anything.

We set up call and form tracking before an ad runs, so the numbers in your report are real. On lead plans we go a step further. We tell Google which leads turned into booked work, so it learns which searches bring paying jobs and not just calls.

What a fence lead cost in one account

In one fencing account we run, a billed Local Services lead cost $31.69 over 90 days in spring 2026. Performance Max in the same account cost $57.87 per conversion, so a Local Services lead cost about half.

ItemValue
Local Services, per billed lead$31.69
Performance Max, per conversion$57.87
One fencing account, March 13 to June 10, 2026. Local Services: $4,246.42 for 134 billed leads. Performance Max: $12,206.82 for 210.94 conversions, which Google attributes and partly models.

That's one account in one spring, so read it as a direction and not a rule for your market. The full table is in our Local Services vs Google Ads study.

Local Services Ads for fence companies

Google lists fencing services as a Local Services category in the US, and you pay for each lead instead of each click. Google offers it place by place, so we check your area before you spend any time on it.

Google screens each business before its ad can run. For fencing, its US list names a background check on the business and the owner, a state license and general liability insurance, each for select businesses. We send Google your license and insurance files and flag each one 45 days before it expires, since 71% of the files Google turned down on our accounts had expired.

Google ranks your ad on your bid and your profile. How fast you answer calls and messages counts, and so do your stars, your review count, your photos and the checks you passed. Google turns down any photo that shows a phone number, even one painted on a truck or printed on a shirt. We pick photos of your finished fences and check each one for a number before it goes up.

When a caller asks what a fence costs, give a range for the material they want and name the one or two things that move it, such as gates or a sloped yard. After that, offer two times when someone can come out to measure. People who hire you write about speed more than price: 29% of the reviews with words on our home service clients' profiles mention speed, and only 11% mention price at all.

Our system rates every lead you pay for at Google, and a person on our team checks the unclear ones. You have 30 days from a lead to ask for a credit, and Google makes the final call on each one. Our Local Services Ads guide covers screening, ranking and setup in the order we do them.

What it costs

Questions

How much does fence company marketing cost?

Ours starts at $497 every 4 weeks for Open Spots Search, plus a $997 setup paid once, or $0 on the 13-cycle plan. Open Spots Local, for Local Services Ads, is $997 every 4 weeks plus a $1,997 build. Your ad spend is separate, and you set the weekly cap.

How many leads does a fence company need?

Work back from the number of fences your crews can build. Say your crews put in four fences a week and you sell one quote out of three, which means you need twelve estimates. If half your callers book a visit, you need twenty-four new callers a week. Use your own rates from the last three months, and check the estimate count every Monday.

Should a fence company run Local Services Ads or Google Search ads?

Start with Local Services if Google offers fencing where you work, because you pay for each lead instead of each click. In one fencing account we run, a billed Local Services lead cost $31.69 over 90 days in spring 2026. Performance Max, another kind of Google Ads campaign, cost $57.87 per conversion in the same account. Then add Search for the fence types and towns you want more of, and our [Local Services vs Google Ads study](/blog/lsa-vs-google-ads/) has the rest.

Should I stop my ads when the crew is booked solid?

We'd look at your estimate count first. A fence you quote today may not go in for a month or more, so the callers you get now feed next month's schedule. You set the weekly cap either way, and we'll talk it through with you first.

Do you work with fence companies outside Arkansas?

Yes. We work with businesses across the US by phone and video. Google offers Local Services trade by trade and place by place, so we check your area before you spend any time on it, and we take at most 2 shops in your trade in each market.
